Orange Lake Resort Selected to Host Educational
Workshop for Teachers
ORLANDO, FLORIDA—January 6, 2005—Orlando's Orange Lake Resort &
Country Club has been selected as the host site for a special one-day
educational workshop on June 30, 2005, for teachers, in partnership
with researchers from The Regal Swan, Inc.® and Florida's Living
Science Program.
Educators enrolled in Indian River Community College's Living Science
Program will come to the resort then to learn about a new science
and reading curriculum—drawn from information gathered from a four-year
study of captive swans conducted by The Regal Swan research team.
Orange Lake's president and CEO, Charles K. Swan III, says, "Orange
Lake has always had a deep concern for the protection of wildlife
and a commitment to the community, and we're very pleased to be
part of this educational effort."
The curriculum—which will be used to teach students (K-12 and adults)
reading, science and math—is dedicated to the late Dorothy Lee Wilson,
nature enthusiast and wife of the late Kemmons Wilson, founder of
Orange Lake.
Orange Lake has been home to captive Mute Swans for many years.
These swans are in the care of two Orange Lake employees, Sheila
and Shirley Bolin, who are also members of The Regal Swan team.
Orange Lake's swans themselves have been a part of the organization's
important research work.
The Regal Swan, Inc.® is an international swan research organization
based in Orlando committed to the humane treatment and veterinary
care of captive swans. Team members were the first to successfully
pioneer the use of vaccines against the botulism toxin and West
Nile virus in swans. For more information, visit www.theregalswan.com.
The Living Science Program, based in Ft. Pierce, Florida, is sponsored
by a U.S. Congressional grant and works in conjunction with several
governmental agencies—including the Smithsonian Marine Station—and
Florida institutions. You can find out more about this program by
going to www.Living-Science.org.
